Panic In the Year Zero, 1962 - Ray Milland
directed this movie, featuring Frankie Avalon as his son, in which Los Angeles and
numerous major U.S. cities receive nuclear attacks. This life-like portrayal of
survival in the midst of chaos will make you think twice about the survivability, and
viability of nuclear war. A good basic survival training film as well. Until about 2 months ago (6/2002), almost impossible to find except by bootleg. Now available on DVD, and the American Movie Channel occasionally. (Orion Pictures) |
Bob Roberts - Watch Tim Robbins, Helen
Hunt, Peter Gallagher and more stars poke fun at the American Political System
through this vehicle. Robbins plays a candidate who, revolted by his hippie parents, runs away from home, commits himself to a military school, becomes a famous folk-singer and then ... runs for office. An all-American rags to riches to rags story. Now playing on Direct TV and cable. Check your listings. Incredibly ironic and cynical and perversely funny.. |

The Last Debate - An investigative
reporter (Peter Gallagher) seeks the truth about theambush of a Presidential Candidate at
the only debate of the election. After finding his deep throat and exposing it
all, you can only come away wondering if it's possible at all to know the truth.
Starring: James Garner The latest movies that are great! The Majestic, starring Jim Carey - Every bit as good as Truman, only 10 times more inspiring. About a man who defies Congress during the era of McCarthyism. Orange County - about a young man seeking his place in life... and at Stanford University, only to find that what truly inspires him is his community... and the symbols that provide him with mentors who lead by example. Gosford Park - The story of murder in a setting of classism and servitude. Very much a wealth vs working class story. Jimmy Neutron - Cute, incredibly well animated story of a boy genius who leads the abandoned children of earth in a quest to find their missing parents.

The Postman, starring Kevin Costner.
Costner's personality contains just enough of an indifferent air to accurately
portray a reluctant leader as he spreads "hope like giving candy to a baby" to
everyone he meets. Tom Petty does a cameo in a very funny scene toward the end. This is a sort of post-apocalyptic movie with the flavor of a western, only because in the new world, people have to rebuild from scratch, so there aren't the conveniences and such. If you think that makes this a depressing movie, you'll be surprised.. I consider it a celebration of the human spirit and human dignity, people calling out to one another and causing each other to be greater than themselves when called upon to support their vision and vigil for true community. It takes the first hour to get through the intro of the movie... depicting the tyranny of Nathan Holnes, installing a feudal system upon the survivors. Then, it becomes about the people and community. May not be a good movie for young children, at least in the first hour. But, if that's not enough, it's got a great version of the old 70's Redbone song, "Come and Get Your Love."
