My Boycott of NBC

A Message to Programmers at NBC

Maybe the news is slow, maybe they know we're right, but since beginning of this campaign, MSNBC has seriously toned down the verbal front on their presentation of propaganda.   But that is not nearly enough.

What I'm going to do is briefly list the techniques they employ to focus their presentation, barring the more blatant character assassinations they have typically used to present the administration's agenda.

I do have to say, in another context, I would be praising the programmers at MSNBC in particular.. they are so good... I really mean that... If I had a news network like them, I'd would truly love the competition of programmatics and formatics that would occur as a result.  It might be fun, if the subject were not so serious. I'd win.  :}

But this is serious, it has to do with the future of America.  It has to do with empowering those people who manipulate economics, tell us they're "the people's choice", and then screw us on another front to get the money back.  It's called a scam. It's fraud. It's irresponsible of MSNBC to package their opinions and spin, and package it as news so as to persuade Americans to "go along".

Today, MSNBC started airing ads for GE, image ads backed by that great phrase "We bring good things to life."  Give us a list of those great things, and I'll be glad to show you how those great things have, in preponderance, given the image of progress at the expense of people.  Can you say PCB?

They began airing a promo claiming to have won the Edward R. Murrow award of broadcasting excellence.  What they don't say is that it was given to the NBC Nightly News and Tom.  I may have missed it, but I don't see a single award for MSNBC (except for the website.)    http://www.rtnda.org/asfi/awards/2002winners.shtml .  That's why we'll be addressing Mr. Brokaw later.

The award is for general reporting, the presentation of the Nightly News..  and I'll admit, I've always liked Tom Brokaw, but it doesn't change the fact that the facade created by a good clean broadcast does not necessarily mean it represents the truth.  There are no awards for follow up, investigative reporting or creativity for NBC as a whole.  Just the production of the most credible (although incomplete) 30 minute broadcast on TV to be used as the supposed basis of truth for their credibility.  No Pass.  I don't buy it.  Good try, though.

But it does make for a good example of the constant presentation of half-truth. Propaganda.  The uninformed will believe them.

Chris Matthews has no business being on the air this very moment criticizing democrats for not "generating the public discussion" (I'm watching to keep up with collecting evidence of propaganda and to record their advertiser list.) Republicans know how to talk, too, don't they? But the tactic is to keep Democrats on the defensive with irrelevant remarks and deposition, not addressing the issues.

It's simply part of a tactic to turn the problems onto the backs of Democrats... just like Bush opened his news conference today by blaming Congress for not passing necessary legislation.   He failed to point out that the legislation being denied is not good for America.

Matthews had Gore Vidal on a while back... introduce him like he was a God. Vidal proceeded to say "the press in America really doesn't tell the American people anything of real importance.. I mean, everybody knows that."  Everybody, by the way, includes the foreign press, and almost every non-American in the world. Chris' reaction suggests Mr. Vidal will not be asked back too soon (or maybe he will, for the purpose of making me look like a biased liar:  That would be a good approach to validate their propaganda.})

Whatever you Programming people do to counter-program the complaints of this boycott are too late. What happened in 2000 happened.  You did what you did.  I will not allow you to propagandize your way out of it.  A propaganda campaign to tell us you're doing good, including the promotion of Phil Donahue, will not convince us you've given up your mastery of propaganda.  Instead, it shows us more.  And there will not be a statute of limitations in terms of  our reminding Americans of your improprieties.

With that, observations:

1) Notice that when a Republican is making a speech, or asking questions in Congress on-air, they allow the person to speak.  If an opposing candidate speaks, or an opposing party asks a question that would undermine the Bush administration's standing, they show the picture of opposition doing it, and then proceed to discuss what they think that opposition person might say, and argue it into irrelevance or ridicule it, never actually addressing the facts of  the issue.

During the 2000 Presidential campaigns, MSNBC, day after day, televised speeches of George Bush in their entirety. The coverage of Nader was all but non-existent.  The coverage of Gore was to take the pre-releases of his speeches, show Gore on stage giving a speech, but talking over the top of it, criticizing everything he said.

That is not new coverage That is pure propaganda and manipulation of public perceptions.

2) Notice that when opposition speakers are allowed to speak, they are not allowed to complete their remarks.  Their opposing guest speaker will be allowed to speak at the same time so that you can't hear the words, speaking with personal criticism, not answering legitimate questions.. and they are allowed to ramble on, taking up the allotted time for presentation of the issues.

3)  Notice you only hear statements and press conferences by opposing leaders when they're angry, or when they can be made of for their personal human quirks.  For example, I might say,  Isn't election fraud a crime?  The response would be something like "You Democrats need to get over it (an intelligent discourse for a propagandist) or it's skinny people like you who are the real problem with America.

An example of this strategy will be provided later this week with an audio presentation of a segment with Host Bob Kerr,  and guests Jeff Lowery and Jeffrey Cohen... Couldn't have found a better example (July 8, 2002, 12:45pm PT). There will be lots of these as time goes by.

4)  Notice that they'll cover the Worldcom hearing, but when Barney Franks speaks, they talk over him, cut away to a commercial, come back to another discussion on other issues.  Now that  Franks is done, they're back on Worldcom coverage.

There are a million ways to make it look like you're giving equal coverage without ever having to do it.  And I'm not fooled.  That's why this list will grow and grow and grow.

That's enough for now.
