A letter to an elected official
subject line:  It's hard to trust my government.

The Honorable (Title) (Name);

Dear Senator (name);

First, I want to thank you for choosing to serve as a representative of the people in the United States Congress.  I know it is a giant undertaking, and your commitment to bettering this nation for the people must be equally large to have motivated you to persevere in your career.

I am writing because I have serious concerns about the direction of the United States Government.  I am concerned because I believe that all semblance of statesmenship - the ability of patriots to see beyond their specific preferences and constituencies to seek a way to find equality and justice for all constituents - has fallen by the wayside in the face of a broadcast media that either does not report truth, or disinforms us with reports based on half-truth and inuendo, settles public arguements through personal & character assassination, or blatantly propagandizes the nation to cause us to accept empty nationalistic causes, to call fellow citizens unpatriotic because they call for reason instead of playground-bully retorts and hypocracies to serve political expediency.

You all think we don't see it, and that we really believe all the propaganda we hear.   But we don't.  And we're pretty tired of it.

Americans have been walking around in denial for nearly 2 years... wondering why our leaders haveb't done anything about what's going on.  We know that justice was not done in the Florida elections... knowing that African Americans in Florida, and many other places around the country, were denied their civil rights in great numbers in significant locales.  It was an insult to them and the leadership and memory of one of the great heroes in our history, Dr. Martin Luther King.  And it was an insult to the entire United States, who did not vote in majority, not even in Florida, for George Bush. Injustice and lack of patriotic determination on the part of Congress has allowed criminals at many levels to benefit from their crimes.  The person at the center of the crimes is running for Congress.  Why hasn't she been arrested?

I am writing to ask you to take specific actions:

1) Expose the real truth about the 2000 election, and demand appropriate criminal actions be taken.  Democracy failed.  Restore it.

2) Publicly decry the propaganda being used to incite and scare Americans into Nationalistic actions for policies that are anti-American, and serve only corporate and militaristic interests.  Call it what it is, and refuse to participate in it.   Restore the concept of sharing ideas and concensus to resolve national issues.

3) Pass the McCain/Feingold Campaign Finance Reform as submitted, and move to a donation-free campaign model, such as is in place in 4 states already.

4) Uphold the separation of church & state

5) Expose corruption, wherever it is found. I am not interested in protecting people's jobs and promoting people for loyalty.  The loyalty of the government should be to the citizens, not to individuals who have amassed power on the back of our good faith.

6) Quit turning your back on civil rights violations by our government.  Freedom of expression and Freedom of the Press cannot truly be suppressed.  Stand up for us citizens in the right of free speech.  Truth and opposing ideas should not be feared. Oppression doesn't succeed, and is illegal.

In essence, what I am asking you to do is to be the leader elected to represent me.

None of us likes having to face corruption... to believe that we have been misled or betrayed.  That's the denial that's overcome America.  It's time for the denial to end.  Americans like me are angry.  Enough is enough.

I urge you to go to www.democraticfundamentalism.org where you'll find more detail on how citizens are beginning to organize and take action to reclaim control of their government, as well as to read something on the site called The Verdict.  It's hard to miss, and well worth reading.

Sincerely,

Chuck Rehn

PS Please read Stupid White Men, by Michael Moore.  That will be a good beginning in the path to the truth. At least you will know that nothing is hidden anymore.  And we know it.
